Each year on July 4th we gather to celebrate our nation’s birth and to celebrate one of our highest values — Freedom. But what do we mean by “freedom?” The Founders knew what they meant – freedom from rule by a tyrant. But the nation’s early inhabitants often disagreed on what shape “freedom” should take, and we’re still very divided on the question. We’ll explore their different ideas using some “what ifs…” from literature. We’ll also acknowledge that freedom is not really free – it only endures alongside responsibility.
